beach fishing

fishing off the beach

The beach in front of the Journey’s End unit is a great place to fish. During my last visit I watched my neighbor haul in a 25 inch redfish after fishing just a few minutes. That inspired me to research fishing off the beach and buy the necessary equipment.

I have to say, the best part about fishing is sitting in a chair near the waters edge and taking advantage of view and the solitude. The best time to fish is right after sunrise or before sunset. These are some of the most beautiful times of the day. I can’t say I ever watched a sunrise before I started fishing, but I’m glad that got me out there. It really is something you should experience. The pictures just don’t do justice to the amazingly relaxing setting. Bring your favorite morning drink. Mine is coffee.

You’re probably ready to sign up at this point, so let me tell you what you need to know. There are two sandbars out front. The fish run in a trough between the shore and the first sandbar. This is easy to cast your line into. There is a second trough between the first and second sandbar. This one is harder to reach unless you really have your casting perfected. You always can wade out a bit to reach it. A few doors to the west you can find a “cut” through the sandbar. Fish are especially drawn to these areas since it has an increased concentration of their natural food.

how to…

Bait depends partly on the species you may be targeting, but the easiest effective bait is frozen or fresh shrimp. Another convenient option is fishbites, which is a synthetic product that looks like a long stick of gum. They are flavored to the fish’s liking. Rigging a pompano rig with two hooks and a 6 ounce pyramid sinker works well. You can find many videos on Youtube with more specifics. I can’t tell you how many hours of those videos I watched. I binge watched them like a new release on Netflix. You would be surprised how interesting and suspenseful they can be. Here is one to get you started. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Bass Pro Shop has the equipment you need. Stinky’s Bait Shack across the street is the other option.

P.S. – don’t forget to buy a license.
